1st Anniversary at Schaerbeek Hospital

We often devalue or fail to appreciate people who are over a certain age, especially when they are diminished by illness. We fail to see them as individuals who have led active and full lives, often with great achievements or fascinating stories to tell. We could also learn much from their experience.

We now celebrate our 1st Anniversary of serving coffee, tea and cake in the two geriatric wards of Brugmann Hospital, Site Paul Brien in Schaerbeek. Those who have been volunteers during this year have had their lives enriched by meeting and talking with some very special people. We remember the artist whose paintings and drawings still decorate the walls of one of the wards; the man who was in the resistance during the Second World War, who was sent to a work camp in Germany; the lady who had worked for an international aid agency and travelled all over the world, speaking perfect English…..and many others. Some, because of age, illness, loss of family members now feel lonely and disorientated and have few or no visitors. They appreciate the offer of a cup of coffee or tea, a friendly smile and encouragement, and the possibility to chat.
